On Thursday, Google co-founder Sergey Brin made a surprise visit to the Web 2.0 Summit and was interviewed on-stage by John Battelle for about 18 minutes. Our full notes from that day are here, but the video above gives a good sense of where Brin’s head is at right now. Also check out his what he’s wearing on his feet at the beginning. I’m not sure if those are shoes or rubber socks.

Brin touches on Twitter, Bing, Android, the growing network of Google alums heading up other companies, the book settlement, his surprising lack of baseball knowledge, and Chrome for Mac, among other subjects.

He points out that search ads were at the bottom of the barrel when Google started. They were considered the equivalent of remnant ads, but that Google’s success is due to seeing value where nobody else was looking. In the same way, he says, it is impossible to predict where the most value will be created on the Web in the future.

A blue film is a film associated with the amateur underground pornography industry in India.[1][2] Other names for the industry include the more reserved 'human trafficking,' which refers to the perceived belief that participants have little or no control over their participation in the films due to economic pressures from the Indian underground crime syndicates, as they are 'trafficked' around.

People are talking. The DaVinci Code has been on the New York Times best-seller list for almost a year and is raising a variety of responses from Christians and non-Christians alike. Some are outraged and upset by the claims of Dan Browne while others are left utterly confused and don't know what to believe. The Davinci Code explodes the myths of the book and shows the realibility of Scripture, the divinity of Christ, as well as the historical facts for the Priory of Zion and the Knight's Templar. This is the only hands-on accessible reference guide. The DaVinci Code even helps you turn debate about the book into an evangelistic opportunity.

The World As I See It -Albert Einstein

To the majority of people Einstein's theory is a complete mystery. Their attitude towards Einstein is like that of Mark Twain towards the writer of a work on mathematics: here was a man who had written an entire book of which Mark could not understand a single sentence. Einstein, therefore, is great in the public eye partly because he has made revolutionary discoveries which cannot be translated into the common tongue. We stand in proper awe of a man whose thoughts move on heights far beyond our range, whose achievements can be measured only by the few who are able to follow his reasoning and challenge his conclusions. There is, however, another side to his personality. It is revealed in the addresses, letters, and occasional writings brought together in this book. These fragments form a mosaic portrait of Einstein the man. Each one is, in a sense, complete in itself; it presents his views on some aspect of progress, education, peace, war, liberty, or other problems of universal interest. Their combined effect is to demonstrate that the Einstein we can all understand is no less great than the Einstein we take on trust.

Google Launches A New Product: Social Search

You can always expect great things out of a Web 2.0 Summit, and it looks as if this one was the mother of all. We have already covered in details the exclusive deals between search engines Google and Bing to index real time results from Twitter and Facebook to display on their platform. Google will only be indexing Twitter though.

But one more announcement which seems to be dying down because of the noise is the arrival of a new Google Labs product: Social Search.

web2.0 summit

Marissa Mayer, Google’s VP of Search announced this during her talk in the summit. The product aims at importing news and feeds from your various social profiles into one place. It will allow you to search for queries from people in your social network. And obviously, this works using the still not very popular Google Profiles service.

If you fill it out with the social networks you have a presence on, Google will scan your network and give you results from those people. It will also be able to show rich media like news, images and videos. The results will be displayed at the bottom of the search results. So I guess this depends on your online connections, the more you are connected, the more results you will see. (You would also need to be signed in to Google)

The product will be launched in Google Labs in the next two weeks. Also, one downside which I can see from here is the fact that such a result would only work for networks that have an open search API, which rules out Facebook. The experiment would be opt-in and you would be asked before your Google Profile is indexed.

With Twitter also being included in Google results now (also BING), the internet has taken one more step towards becoming truly social, a huge mesh of interconnected websites, sharing and harnessing the data flowing around in data cables.

Google Music Service to Launch (Apparently) – Impact on India?

By Aditya varma on Saturday, October 24, 2009

The tech world is all set to get a make-over. We just covered Bing announcing that they’ll be indexing Twitter and Facebook, with Google hurriedly yelling, Me Too! Then Google kicked it up a notch by announcing social search. Google’s been making a LOT of changes to its search interface (Our take on most of it can be found here). Now, Google has had a music search for quite a while now. To search, all you have to do is append “music: “as a prefix to the song or album you are searching for (though I tried a few recent songs like Cemeteries of London by Coldplay and I was unable to find it).

Now, TechCrunch has announced that Google will be launching a full blown Music Search Service which will not only allow you to search for music, but also sample it, and buy it. Yesterday, TechCrunch reported of a possible tie-up between Google, iLike.com and Lala.com. Though TechCrunch did not get any comments from Google, iLike or Lala, they further went on to confirm the release of the music search facility. More so, the story seems realistic. TechCrunch supplemented their story with screenshots. The service is set to allow the user to search for music, and will come with a preview option.

Here’s a screenshot of the new service:

googlemusic1

Whether true or not, (though the screenshots do lend veracity), Google launching Music Search is a cool idea.

With music sales going down and records not being sold, this might give the music industry it’s much-required breath of fresh air. People search for music and music reviews all the time. Last.fm is extremely popular, as are other online radios like live360.com.

How does it affect India?

Not very much actually, the Indian music scene is quite different when compared to the west. Songs are essentially marketing devices for the movie and hence, the more viral the song, the better the film’s hype. Now, Google Music does not recognize Hindi songs. I tried a Google Search for “music: Wake up Sid” and “music Wake up Sid“. The results were not really all that awesome. Also, the resources are primarily torrent sites.

The Music Search Industry is a huge business. Especially in India, where everyone loves music and more importantly, isn’t willing to pay extravagant amounts for it. So, is there a potential for Google Music / Google Audio coming to India. Unlikely.

It’s not that iLike doesn’t have Indian Music. I was mildly surprised to find Kuch Kuch Hota Hai while searching. Ditto with Google Music Search. It’s just the sheer enormity and diversity in Indian music. It’s not just Bollywood and Slumdog Millionaire as the West perceives it. The Tamil and Telugu music industry have huge fan bases. Sufi music, Carnatic, Hindustani resources are extremely difficult to find. I found three albums of T M Krishna on Google Music search. I admit, I found a LOT of songs on iLike.com, but was unable to purchase them through iTunes India – some error.

Now, we’ve covered the Indian Search Engine space pretty thoroughly. Guruji.com, boasts of being the best music search engine. I tried varied entries in Guruji, and boy was I impressed. From old Hindi to contemporary to Carnatic to Coldplay, they have most of it. We’ve covered info and features on Guruji.com earlier. Check here for more resources.

I tried searching for Wake Up Sid – Music on three different sources. Guruji.com, Google Music Search and iLike.com

google music search wake up sid

ilike music search wake up sid

guruji music search

(Please click on the pictures to see the full search results)

There is no doubt who takes the cake here at least.

The thing about Guruji is that it allows different people to use it differently. It allows you to listen to the song and/or download it. Aggregating from several other sites, that makes an impressive database of songs, indexed by artist, album and title.

For those picky about “stealing music” by downloading it illegally off the Internet, you may choose to listen to the song. Now, the ability to download is pretty cool, but it could attract law hassles in the future. www.in.com also has an impressive music collection, but without downloading ability.

Google does offer music downloads, but only in China. And that only after immense competition from Baidu, which also offers mp3 search. Now, you can’t download the songs if you’re not connected from China. I wonder though whether it’s proxy protected.

As of now, local search for music seems to be more impressive than international. Will that trend change? Music and Digital Media Rights are extremely picky issues and India barely has a concrete Intellectual Property Rights law in place.

Also, a song download from iTunes or Lala.com costs close to $1.5, which approximates to a Rs. 75. iTunes offers its more popular music at 0.99$, which is still Rs. 40. Will Indians ever pay that much for a song? When you get entire music collections for close to Rs. 300? One pirated CD costing Rs. 50 can get you close to 6 albums of current popular music. Can a service like Google Audio or GTunes as people have been referring to it as ever hope to compete in this environment?

So what’s the future of local music search? Will Google do something similar as they did in China?

Let’s see who’s competing with Google now internationally. This puts it in direct conflict with Apple’s iTunes. iLike was acquired by MySpace. So this could mean MySpace tying up with Google. If you remember our post on Bing indexing Facebook, there was no mention of Google. We’ve covered a lot of Facebook v/s Google articles in the past.

Just following the announcement of the two biggies in Search to index Twitter, I recently read this interesting article on Robert Scoble’s blog on how Facebook was losing out by tying with Bing and not Google, while Twitter did both.

So what about Facebook? Considering how much time people spend on it, wouldn’t it be cool if they too got into Music? What’s next Facebook v/s Google v/s Apple for the new king of entertainment and multimedia?

Google Maps Improves The Ability To See Where The Streets Have No Name

Since its inception, Google Maps has always rolling out little tweaks and new features that are useful. But today comes the first large-scale overhaul of the look and feel of the service in quite a while. But you may not even notice it.

The reason is that almost all of the changes are very subtle. And unless you spend hours looking at Google Maps everyday, you probably aren’t going to realize when a road outline has been toned down, for example. But looking at the side-by-side images, it’s clear to see that the new look is much nice. Gone is much of the clutter cause by darkened street outlines.

In Google’s own words, from their post

Today’s changes are intended to keep the same information-rich map while making it easier to pick out the information that is most useful. The changes affect both the ‘Map’ and ‘Hybrid’ styles, and include numerous refinements to color, density, typography, and road styling worldwide. For example, in map view, local and arterial roads have been narrowed at medium zooms to improve legibility, and the overall colours have been optimized to be easier on the eye and conflict less with other things (such as traffic, transit lines and search results) that we overlay onto the map. Hybrid roads have gained a crisp outline to make them easier to follow, and the overall look is now closer to an augmented satellite view instead of a simple overlay.

Again, subtle, but much better. (Click on the images below to see more clearly.)

Carl Icahn Says His Work Is Done, Resigns From Yahoo’s Board

By Aditya varma on Saturday, October 24, 2009

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn is resigning from Yahoo’s board of directors. According to MarketWatch, he said “there was not a need at this time for an activist investor” at Yahoo anymore and that he’d rather focus on other companies. The subtext there being that either A) he feels that his work is done and he can move on now that the search deal with Microsoft is moving towards government approval, or B) he can make more money by trying to control some other company.

Icahn wrestled his way onto Yahoo’s board last year when Jerry Yang was still CEO. Initially, he wanted to try to revive Microsoft’s interest in acquiring Yahoo outright, but when it became clear Microsoft didn’t want to do that deal anymore, he supported the search deal as the best way to move forward.

It’s hard to determine whether Icahn is throwing in the towel on Bartz or this is actually a vote of confidence. If he really believes in where Bartz can take the company after the search deal is done, then you’d think he’d keep his board seat to have a stronger influence on the company’s direction. But Icahn has always been a transaction-oriented investor. He tries to push companies to do things that will move the stock in a big way, and then he takes his profits and he leaves.

More likely than not, Icahn doesn’t see another big shift he can push the company to take that will affect the stock in any major way. And with the stock price moving in the right direction, he probably doesn’t see the need to keep shaking the boat. It is much easier for him to just keep selling his shares (he sold almost $180 million worth in August alone) and move on. With the stock trading at $17, some of Icahn’s shares are still underwater, but he also bought a bunch at $10 last November. At this point, he’ll probably be happy just to get all of his initial investment back, which he is still far from doing.

SGN’s CEO Talks About F.A.S.T. Going Free And The Realities Of A Changing App Store

Last week Apple surprised the iPhone’s developer community with the annoucement that it was finally allowing free apps to offer in-app purchases. The move will likely lead to a fundamental shift in the way developers conduct businesss on the App Store (we’ve already begun to see some changes). I sat down with SGN CEO Shervin Pishevar to talk about the annoucement’s effect on SGN’s upcoming games, as well as its impact on the market in general.

Pishevar says that he was estactic when he heard the news — he almost immediately recorded a video sharing his elation that he sent to all of SGN’s 100+ employees worldwide. He explains that this is really the announcement that he’s been waiting for, but that he had no expectation that Apple might do it so soon. Now the company is working at a brisk pace to take advantage of the change: it will soon be releasing a new free version of its smash hit game F.A.S.T., which has done over $1.8 million in sales before Apple’s cut. The new version of F.A.S.T. will feature an extensive array of virtual goods, which users will be able to purchase once they’ve downloaded the core game, which will be free. I also suspect that many (if not all) of SGN’s games will be released for free from here on out.

After discussing the impact on SGN’s apps, the conversation turned toward how this will impact developers in general. The App Store is going to see some major changes, and some of those won’t necessarily be for the better. For one, it will become even harder for premium applications to get noticed — before now they only had to compete against other ‘paid’ apps for a chance to appear on the Top Apps list. Now many of them will be migrating to the much more crowded ‘free’ section, which means they’ll be facing off with the vast array of ‘fun’ apps that are so enticing for impulse downloads. There’s also the possibility that the store will become flooded with applications that you can download for free, but really offer nothing of value until you start paying for features, despite what users may have been led to believe (a so-called ‘bait and switch’).

Pishevar agrees that the new market may pose a challenge to new developers, who may have trouble getting noticed and establishing trust with users. But he says that the development houses that can establish a relationship with users will be able to rise to the top, even more so than before. That scenario would obviously put SGN, which has millions of installs across all of its games, in a good position.

But Pishevar emphasized that SGN isn’t going to be content to simply rest on its laurels and exploit its large audience by rehashing games that have already been successful (he notes that the the highly derivative nature of many games on Facebook was one of the reasons SGN decided to shift over to the iPhone). Instead, he says he wants to push the limits of the iPhone, and eventually other mobile platforms. And to prove that wasn’t just marketing talk, he gave me a sneak peek at some of the projects that SGN has in the works. I’m sworn to secrecy on those for now, but suffice to say, SGN has some seriously cool things in the pipeline right now that really will take mobile gaming to the next level.

This medical thriller tells the story of three female doctors trying to prove themselves in a profession dominated by men. Each of them has their own story, and each of their tales are well connected and intertwined with each other. But suddenly there is chaos, one dies, another is about to get the hospital shut down, and the third faces the death penalty for murder. The novel follows a twisty plot with a typical Sheldon surprise ending.

Morning, Noon and Night is another master piece of Sidney Sheldon. The story is no less intriguing than the other of his great works. It is full of twists, turns and a very shocking ending. The book consists of various sub-plots each more interesting than the other. This is a great thriller novel having all the elements of successful action novel like revenge, greed, murder and blackmail.
